Dean
Dean couldn't feel the weight of Jason's arm around his shoulder. He couldn’t move. It felt as though everything inside of him had turned to stone as he looked over at Daniel, lying so still. He was hooked up to so many wires and his face was so swollen and bruised that Dean could barely recognize him. He wasn’t sure what to say, or if Daniel could even hear him, but for some reason, Dean remembered the day he’d moved in with him. He was still so angry at his parents, angry at the world, and Daniel had just accepted him. He took all of Dean’s anger for everyone and still cared about him at the end of the day. Dean remembered the hug he gave him when he picked him up at the airport. He hadn’t hugged him back. Dean remembered the smile on his face when Daniel had shown Dean his room, all set up for him, complete with an easel and some cool art supplies he’d bought for him. He remembered how Daniel’s smile had faltered when Dean told him that he didn’t draw or paint anymore. He never said anything else to Dean about it, just patted him on the back and told him that it was there if he ever wanted it. He remembered the dinner Daniel cooked for him that first night. He’d made all of Dean’s favorites, of which Dean had hardly eaten a bite of. Dean had been so selfish with the love he should’ve given the man and Daniel had never been anything but good to him. Dean swallowed the lump in his throat and tried hard to blink back the tears that were threatening. Some fell over his cheeks anyway. Jason tried to squeeze him closer, halfway hugging him without pulling him in, like he knew Dean wouldn’t accept the gesture. He wiped a hard hand across his eyes to get rid of the evidence. Without looked away from Daniel, Dean whispered, “Can you get Riker for me?” He hardly knew him, but he felt like he needed his presence more than anything in the world at that moment. He needed Riker’s strength next to him.
“Sure Dean,” Jason whispered before Dean heard his footsteps recede from the room.
Unbidden, a few more tears tracked down Dean’s cheeks. He had to blink hard to clear them away, his eyes never leaving Daniel. He was the first one in his family who taught Dean what family actually meant; that it meant sticking by them and loving them no matter what. Dean wished it hadn’t taken him so long to understand just how much the man had actually done for him. His only wish was that he get a chance to tell Daniel how much he appreciated it. Soon, he felt strong arms wrap around him from behind, felt the heat of Riker’s body penetrate the cold that had wrapped itself around him. Riker leaned his head on Dean’s should and remains silent, lending his quiet strength.
